*** A Mystery - Solved ***

Did Tracey Ullman appear on Saturday Night Live in 1986 or 1987?

The answer is YES -- see below.

That's what Meredith McKay, a major fan of Tracey's and a regular reader of this Web site, says.  She distinctly remembers seeing Tracey on a segment of SNL in either 1986 or '87.  Here, she explains what it was all about.

She wasn't the host or anything. It was during the 1986-7 season and I think the host might have been Sigourney Weaver or Robin Williams. It was just a featured sketch and was almost like a home video or something. It wasn't filmed at the studio, it was filmed at her home I think and was just a 5 minute, maybe 10 sketch about actresses who have children. It was hilarious as she had Mabel sitting around as she talked about how she was the most wonderful mother. She left Mabel on the roof of the car, let her play with guns etc. And the whole time she kept talking about how wonderful motherhood was and how she was the best mother, who just happened to be the most wonderful actress. At the end of it we see Mabel playing with a big rifle on the bed while she talks on the phone and we think she is going to shoot herself, but instead Mabel turns it on her mother and kills her and then drives away in the car. It was really hilarious and I wish I had taped it. I would have if I had known. I'm still watching for it. I can assure you though that my eyes weren't deceiving me and it was Tracey.

However, Tracey recently (June 2000) stated at the Banff TV Festival that she's refused to do SNL because "It's still a guy's world. It's predominantly male. I've never done the show because they treat the girls like doo-doo."   Of course, this clip may not have been done specifically for SNL.  But I was still watching SNL on occasion back then, and I don't ever remember seeing anything like this.  That doesn't mean it didn't air; doesn't mean it did, either.  But it appears that it did air after all....

*** Mystery Solved ***

August 2, 2000: Meredith reports that, according to Screen Source, Tracey was a "special guest" on the May 16, 1987 episode of SNL.  Garry Shandling was the host; Los Lobos was the band.  However, Saturday NET's listing for this episode does not mention her.  Then again, the episode summaries are not always complete, says the site's owner, but he's working on that.

August 4, 2000:  Frank Serpas III, Webmaster of Saturday NET, confirms that "Hollywood Mom," a film featuring Tracey, appeared in the May 16, 1987 of SNL.  Apparently, the film was not done specifically for SNL; they just acquired the rights to air it.  Sadly, it does not appear in the 60-minute version of the episode that airs on the Comedy Central network.  However, the Comedy Network in Canada airs full-length versions of many episodes, and this may be one of them.  So I call on our Canadian friends to be on the watch for this episode.  And if anyone out there has it already, I really want to hear from you!  You can reach me at [removed].

March 10, 2002:  NBC repeated this episode of SNL in the overnight block, and it was the full version, which meant that it contained the film.  As of this typing, I have yet to see the film.  Thanks to Harry Henry Gebel for alerting me to this.
